How Biopics Manipulate You (and the Many Controversies of Sir Charlie Chaplin) | Video Essay
Chaplin. You know the name, but do you know the guy? In 1992, Richard Attenborough put out his biopic about the famous silent film star and, in the process, brought his filmography to a new generation of movie lovers. However, he might have skipped a detail or two in the process, and today, I'll be reviewing those details he missed and use them to discuss the faults of the biographical film genre as a whole. The genre is beloved by movie goers (and the Academy) for bringing some of the most famous people in history back to life, but it likely doesn't come as a shock to you that it often takes a few liberties in the process. So today, we'll talk about the cash incentives behind biopics, why they're so common, and what many of them do when they try to compress an entire person's life story into a two to three hour long movie. Chapters: 00:00 - Intro 01:30 - Who was Charlie Chaplin? 05:31 - Telling a life story (and how Chaplin goes about it) 15:39 - A criticism on the lack of criticism of Chaplin 28:08 - A broader look at the genre 40:42 - How Chaplin (kinda) pushes back on the limitations of the biopic 50:13 - Closing thoughts 53:31 - Sign Off #oscars #charliechaplin #academyawards Support the channel: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/NicheCaesar Channel Membership: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCscDbMTovs2Zww6by8HSDMg/join Socials: Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/nichecaesar.bsky.social Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/nichecaesar Media Obscura and Glaring Admissions (Podcast): https://pod.link/themediaobscura Guppy Falls (eBook): https://a.co/d/isBwHfu

The Magic of Physical Media (especially, but not limited to, DVDs)
DVDs. Digital Video Discs, if you will. You've got the D, you've got the V, and you've got an extra D in your back pocket. So many video. Much versatile. Since their inception in the mid 90s, they've been an absolute powerhouse of a format. Despite weighing next to nothing and fitting in the palm of your hand, they can hold hours of entertainment in high quality. And, for nearly three decades, they've been a mainstay in many homes throughout the world. In fact, DVDs *still* outsell every other form of home media to this day! So today, I thought I'd take the time to discuss (ha, disc. Us. I'm talking about discs with you. We are an us.) why the format still rocks. I'll talk about how they allow us to truly own our media, how they're more accessible for the sizable number of Americans without high speed internet at home, how their quality isn't as bad as you may think they are, and why they may even transform your relationship with film as a whole.
